The Vedic scriptures say that the sense of separation from our Divine Self, is the cause of all human difficulty and suffering.

ree

In most cultures we are told from an early age that Divinity exist "out there" and that as human beings we are inherently separate from it. Divinity or the Self is described as the unattainable state of eternal bliss that we might get a glimpse of at the end of a long road of practices and renunciation, if we are lucky and deserving. This leaves many seekers with the powerless feeling of not ever having a chance to get there or of never being good enough....

Luckily there have been sages and saints throughout the ages who knew a different Truth; a Truth that is unchanging and rooted in Divinity itself. They live a state of consciousness free from separation with the Divine. I will refer to it as Oneness, although it is called by different names in different traditions. These rare and wise Beings have been writing and transmitting their knowledge of Oneness. Not only that, but they have left us the gift of Meditation - the possibility to experience the state of Oneness in our own being.

After a while, when we close our eyes to meditate, we notice a change in our perceptions. If we remain alert and observing of what we perceive, we notice that our awareness of the body, thoughts and emotions begins to change. They are no longer the solid forms and concepts we know during the day. Somehow they become more transparent and fluid, and we notice that they come and go. The longer we observe, the more aware we become of an infinite and unchanging space in which these perceptions come and go.

With practice and the right guidance, we have a chance to realize that the Watcher of the Space, the perceptions coming and going in the Space and the Space itself are one and the same: One Self, One Being, One I - never separate. Knowing ourselves as that One Being, we live our lives happily, peacefully and utterly free from any sense of separation from our own divine Self.

Online Meditation Teacher Training/Meditation Quote: Knowledge of the Self is not the accumulation of information

We grow up with the idea that knowledge is power. We are told from an early age that a good education will give us a chance to better our lives, to reach our goals and to have a happy and fulfilled existence. Our school system fills the heads of children with unceasing information, as if accumulating facts and figures might improve their intelligence and give them an advantage over others. As adults we are constantly bombarded with information from all sides. Our heads are crowded with an overabundance of details and data - and yet we continue to watch the news and follow everything and everybody on social media. We seem to believe that at the end of the race for more information we will find some sort of satisfaction: an answer that might release us from worry and anxiety, more clarity to deal with the difficulties of life or the keys to finally find happiness.

Eventually we come to the conclusion that as much as we need facts and details to get through our everyday lives, no amount of information has the power to give us what we are really looking for. Extra knowledge may provide a fleeting sense of temporary satisfaction or understanding, but it never frees us from the highs and lows of the ever-changing fluctuations of our mind.

If our goal is to live the kind of peace and freedom that do not change, then the database of the intellect - however full and brilliant it may be - does't have the ability to get us there. What we are yearning for has, in fact, nothing to do with intellectual knowledge or accumulated information.

We must look beyond the intellect if we want to access a dimension that is not subject to change. Given that we function almost exclusively within the realm of the waking state intellect, we may feel like there is no other dimension available to us. And yet - we all have had moments of a different kind of knowing. Some call it intuition, others refer to it as "gut feeling". Whatever name we give this kind of knowledge, it has very specific characteristics that differentiate it from intellectual knowing:

  • this knowledge comes from a place deep inside

  • it is not the result of thinking

  • often it happens when we have given up on trying to figure something out

  • it just "pops up" while we are doing something else

  • when this kind of knowledge emerges, we somehow recognize it as true

  • this type of knowledge is doubtless (unless we begin to listen to our mind's opinions again :-)

We could call this knowledge the voice of the Self. It exists at all times as the everlasting and all-permeating Space of Peace at the back of our mind's chatter. It is the unchanging Source of all manifestation, including our human forms, our thoughts, emotions and imagination. When we close our eyes in Meditation, that Space gets opened in us and we create the possibility for it to reveal itself. We begin to see that behind the data of accumulated information and thought is a reality, a Knowingness so vast, it takes our breath away. The more we meditate, the more we realize that we are not separate from that infinite Space, we see that in fact we are One with that Knowingness and that it is our True Nature.

The waking state consciousness, the so-called normal human state is filled with thoughts, ideas, concepts, conclusions, expectations and judgments that flow through our mind all day long. We don't invite the thoughts and we have no control over the their flow. This movement in the mind is constantly changing, coming and going. At times we experience this stream of thoughts as our inner voices that tell us we are right or wrong, happy or unhappy, successful or not.

Online Meditation Teacher Training/Meditation Quote:Meditation fill you with the Awareness of the Eternal Self

If our attention remains exclusively on the level of thinking, the thoughts appear to have all the power. If they are positive we are happy, if they are negative we are uncomfortable or we begin to worry. A sense of helplessness is often the result when we are constantly involved with our thoughts and their meaning. Think about it: a mechanism over which we have no control, that randomly produces thoughts without our invitation or agreement, is in charge of how we feel and what we consider ourselves capable of doing. It is no wonder that we feel things are out of control at times, if this mechanism is the pilot of our lives...

Meditation gives us access to an entirely different state of consciousness. When we close our eyes and reorient our attention to the space in which the thoughts and their movement appear and disappear, we notice the fundamental qualities of that space: It never changes, it is always present, it has no beginning and no end, and it is pure, whole and complete in itself. Sitting in Meditation, we have the possibility to allow this space to fill our awareness with these qualities. The more we practice Meditation with the right guidance, the more we realize that we are One with that space - that We Are that infinite Space, the Self itself.
