Through the mystery of Creation, when the eternally Pure and Free Space manifests as a human being, an individual mind gets formed. In this process of embodiment, the vision and knowledge of the Eternal Being get confined to a small fraction of the Pure Vision. The result is the human instrument of perception that we call the mind.

Online Meditation Training/Meditation Quote: When Space become a form, we only see the form and forget the Space

In order to function in the world, the mind is given a set of helpers in the form of the senses. They all have different functions, but they can only perceive material forms. The subtle realm of the invisible Space is not accessible to the senses and the mind. Once the individual mind is formed and has accepted its separate existence, it looses the faculty to remember its own source, the Pure Space.

Just as a sprout does not remember the seed from which it originated, a human mind is not equipped to know its Source. In the same way, when we meet a friend, we see his form, his physical appearance and attributes, but we don’t see the Life-force or Pure Space that animates him. We may smell the beautiful fragrance of a rose, but we won’t know its origin.

This is why as human beings we feel separate from the Source, separate from our Divine Nature. Having forgotten that in essence we Are the fullness of the Pure and Free Space, we keep looking for completion and fulfilment in relationships, possessions or achievements. We can spend years, decades or even lifetimes in this pursuit; but sooner or later we come to the realisation that no amount of money or success can give us a lasting sense of fulfilment and happiness.

Those lucky enough to reach this stage of disillusionment will start to inquire more deeply and look for a means to “remember” their True Nature. Meditation is that means. It is the most direct and the most powerful way to reconnect with Source of our Being.

When we close our eyes, we have a chance to perceive the infinite Space of the Being. It is important to know that the Space may not be what we notice at first, because, as is the case with the eyes open, we see the forms first. In this instance it is likely that we first perceive the forms of our thoughts. Being used to believing that we are these thoughts, we might initially miss the Space in which they come and go. With proper guidance we will learn to remain watching silently until the attention shifts from the thoughts - which are like moving clouds - to the sky in which they appear. The sky is infinite and unchanging. It doesn’t mind whether there are a few clouds floating in it, or if a thick cover of storm clouds is brewing. The sky is free and unaffected by what happens in it.... Through practice and repetition we develop the power to remain with the sky and to realize that we Are the sky, the Source, the Space. Pure Free and Forever

A persistent and pervasive myth keeps countless people from pursuing their own Meditation practice; namely the belief that one needs to empty or control the mind in order to be able to meditate. This weighty misunderstanding is due to an unfortunate translation and lack of understanding of the original yogic scriptures as well as to the nature of the mind itself.

Online Meditation Training/Meditation Quote: A busy mind is not a problem if you know you are not the mind

The human mind is in perpetual motion. We can equate it to a gigantic database that stores all the impressions, thoughts and conclusions accumulated during a lifetime. This enormous storehouse of information moves and churns thoughts incessantly. Depending on the situation we find ourselves in, specific thoughts connected to memories and events will surface and and come to the fore every moment of every waking hour. Sometimes these thoughts are very powerful and persistent. They seem to have an energy of their own. At times they may even appear to take away our ability to remain calm or to function properly.

Because we believe that our thoughts and our identity are one and the same, we also believe that we are at the mercy of the thoughts and the meaning we make of them. We are convinced that a thought is real and true - just because it appears. If, for example, one has a history of being told repeatedly that they are not good enough (or smart enough, or good looking enough, or slim enough....), they will likely feel unable to realize their full potential. Every time an opportunity to be successful presents itself, old thoughts of their lack of value will come up and paralyze their efforts. If we believe that the thoughts conveyed by the negative voice in our head is real and tells the truth, then that voice will control our lives....

Meditation allows us to realize that there is an “I” far vaster than the I mixed with the thoughts that we call “me”. It is the “I” that is aware of the coming and going as well as the content of the thoughts - yet this “I” is neither involved nor affected by them. When you close your eyes you notice the presence of many thoughts. Depending on your activities in the hours prior to sitting down to meditate, there may be an impressive amount of thoughts chasing each other. You can now spend your time to either go along with the racing thoughts or try to control them, or you can decide to step back and watch them.

The simple step of not associating with the thoughts reveals a great secret. It brings to light the presence of a knowing and watching “I” that is perceiving every movement of the thoughts. This “I” is free, uninvolved and never affected by the presence or absence of thoughts. It exists before thoughts arise, when they are present and also when the thoughts subside. This “I” is the ever-present Knower or Self - the Source of all thoughts, emotions and forms. If our attention is firmly established as the Knower “I” - it doesn’t matter whether there are thoughts coming and going - or not.

We then realize that, as the vast and eternal Knower “I”, thoughts, their meaning, their presence or absence don’t have any power over our unchanging inner Peace and Freedom. Meditation is the practice where we remain with the Knower “I” as our true identity. As we become more established in that knowlege, we notice that it truly doesn’t matter whether the mind is busy or not, because we know ourselves as the ever Free Knower.

.

The part of you that recognizes that you are already Free is not the human mind. It is the Self, the Freedom itself, that recognizes its own Truth.

This statement may appear cryptic, for as human beings, we think our only way of knowing is through the individual mind or intellect. That‘s what we were told from an early age and that‘s what we have practiced and believed throughout our lives.

Online Meditation Training/Meditation quote: You are already Free-Meditation is how you know it

The Sages and Saints have been telling a different story for thousands of years to those who want to find a deeper truth. They remind us that there is a direct knowing that exists, whether the mind and intellect are active or not. Think of a newborn baby. Nobody has to tell the little one how to drink milk from its mother, how to breathe or how to move its arms and legs - when we are born, we just „know“ these things. In the same way, there are times when we „know“ something with certainty and doubtlessness, even though the mind has no way of being sure about said thing.

When we take the time to observe this phenomenon, we see that there are two different kinds of knowing: The first is the one we are most familiar with - it is the recognition and knowing of things and forms in front of our eyes through the senses and mind. This is the human knowing that gets us through life with a sense that I, this individual person with a mind, know what I see. The second kind of knowing exists „outside“ or „beyond“ the mind and intellect. In other words, this kind of knowing does‘t need the mind and intellect in order to know. Which brings us to understand a very fundamental point in the science of Meditation: that if a knowing without intellect exists, there must be a Knower that knows without the help of the intellect.

That Knower is the Free Being that exists throughout. It is at the Source of every form, every thought and every breath. Even when it is covered by the constant movement of our thoughts - the chatter of the mind that starts as soon as we wake up - the Knower remains Free and ever-present.

Going back to the quote above, we now see that it is the human knowing/mind that wants to be free. Its experience is lack of freedom and the narrow vision of its limited sensory perceptions. When Shyam says you are already Free, he is saying that you are so much more than the limitations of the mind: You Are that Free Knower Being who knows its Freedom. And since the Sage knows the human mechanism so thoroughly, he then adds the technique for us to know that we are the Knower Being: practice that you Are Free!

Meditation is the practice that allows us to cultivate the knowledge that counters the mind’s limitations by repeating: I AM FREE. I am PURE FREE FOREVER. When we sit with our eyes closed, we can silently say these words again and again: I AM PURE FREE FOREVER (in Sanskrit: Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum). Through the power of these words, their vibration and their meaning, our attention is easily oriented away from the mind and its thoughts. In fact, we realize that the thoughts are simply movements arising and disappearing in the vast Space that we perceive behind closed eyes. That Space is the constancy, the unchanging field of Freedom or Free Being that is the Source. As the Knower of that Source we are forever FREE.
